Located in the Central Andes of Peru, Ayacucho is a town of rich and well-preserved traditions,
despite a tumultuous recent history.
It was the birthplace of Shining Path, a communist guerilla group that ravaged Peru throughout the 1980's
and 1990's, and Ayacucho was among the hardest hit areas of Peru.
While showing signs of recovery, Ayacucho remains the second poorest province in Peru.
