In many forests around the world, logging still contributes to habitat destruction, water pollution, displacement of indigenous peoples, and violence against people who work in the forest and the wildlife that dwells there.

Bolivia was one of the first countries to initiate efforts promoting the conservation of its forests through sustainable management and FSC forest certification, a trend that began early in the 1990s and grew stronger following the passing of Bolivia's forestry law in 1995. As of 2005 Bolivia had certified more than two million hectares of forest, making this South American country the world leader in FSC tropical forest certification.
