This ornament is handmade in Mali from fabric that looks like Kente cloth - the cloth worn by Asante Kings in
Ghana hundreds of years ago. Today it provides the inspiration for many fabrics throughout West Africa.
These angels are made by the women's association in Segou, Mali called "Sininyesigi"
or "Plan the Future" that also crafts mud cloth stuffed animals.
The fabric of each angel is a bit different, but all have bright red wings and each angel holds a small baby in front.
The angels are about 7" in height (baby 2.5") and have a 3" red loop on the back
from which to hang the angel.
Recycled Can Christmas Decorations
Here are the famed "Recycled Anti-Malaria Angels and Santa" from Mali.
These great decorations got their name because they are typically made from
discarded mosquito insecticide cans.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund
(UNICEF), Africa bears the brunt of the world's malaria cases. It is home to 90% of the
estimated 1-million deaths (3000 per day!) caused by the mosquito-borne disease each year.
Simple measures like insecticide, treated nets, and education about the disease could prevent
the majority of these daily tragedies.
In regions where UNICEF and its partners have concentrated special efforts,
76% of young children in Mali now sleep
under insecticide-treated mosquito nets, thus reducing their exposure to malaria.
