Bird Pottery

These beautiful vases were hand thrown and decorated in San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua. They're low temperature fired - the pottery is not glazed inside, so it will not hold water and should not be used for food. Individually crafted artworks, they're sure to add interest to your home just as they are, or perhaps holding a dried flower bouquet. Bird lovers will especially thank you.

Like most agricultural communities in Nicaragua, San Juan de Oriente has a long history of handbuilding utilitarian pottery such as comales and water jugs.

Today almost everyone in San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua participates in the making of pottery at some level - there are throwers, decorators, supplier etc. Most of the artisans work in small family workshops and then come together in cooperatives for marketing purposes. It is truely an amazing story about the impact microenterprise development can have on a community.
