Nicaragua

High upon a beautiful pine-covered ridge live the women of the women's cooperative of El Cerro, Nicaragua who make these pine needle baskets. They harvest the pine needles and then begin the long process of weaving the baskets by hand. It can take a woman a full week to complete one of the larger baskets, such as the one below left.

The aroma of pine lingers long after it is finished.

We loved these pine needle baskets the moment we picked them up! The craftsmanship is excellent. The sides are smooth, each piece is well-shaped, and feels very solid and sturdy.

Guatemala

These environmentally friendly baskets are handmade by indigenous women from rural areas of Guatemala who weave with expertise and with designs passed down from their Mayan ancestors. The women receive support through Fundacion FAFIDESS, Fundacion CODESPA and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI)

By purchasing any of these "Mayan Treasures", you will be helping to maintain an ancient knowledge and contribute to the economic and social development of Guatemalan indigenous women.

Each Guatemalan basket comes with a small information card that is signed by the artisan who made that basket!
