Indigo, a leguminous plant with pea-shaped pods and pinkish flowers, was widely cultivated throughout the
tropical Americas in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was valued world-wide by textile manufacturers for its natural blue dye.
For more than 300 years, until indigo was replaced by synthetic dyes in the 1880's,
El Salvador was the leading producer and exporter of indigo.
Used since pre-Colombian times by the indigenous peoples of El Salvador, indigo is
deeply rooted in the country's culture and traditions. The indigenous people of the region believed
that "Juquilite" (indigo) and its deep blue color had magical / religious properties.

Ecological concerns over chemical dyes are now helping return indigo to its former standing as a premier natural dye.
The Indigo Trading Company is working with farmers to produce high-quality organic indigo dyes, and to revitalize a
cottage industry producing hand-crafted home accessories, clothing, and educational indigo dye kits.
