Huipil (Wee-peel) is the Spanish term for the traditional blouse worn by Mayan women in Guatemala.
It is the most significant part of her costume, and to the knowledgeable observer it identifies a women's village,
social and marital status, religious background, wealth, and individual personality.
A well-woven huipil can last 20 to 30 years before it's sold at market and starts a second life as a rag,
quilt, or handbag. Since these items are created from many different blouses, designs and styles will vary. Backgrounds of each item
will also vary somewhat - some will be a more solid color, others will have stripes. But you get to choose the main background color.
The fair wages the artisans receive improves their living conditions and helps build a better life
for themselves and their families.
Joyabaj Huipils
These huipils once were worn by Mayan women from Joyabaj. They're characterized by their dark,
tightly woven cloth with light-colored appliqué, and woven collars.

Cotton lined. Magnetic closure. Huipil designs will vary but will be similar to these with
orange, red, brown, copper, green, brown tones. About 18" wide x 13" high for the main part of the bag. Handle works well for hand or shoulder use.

Large Cotzal Huipil Bags

Three panels make up the Cotzal huipil blouse, featuring alternating geometric bands, interspersed with figures of birds or 4-footed creatures,
and they've been converted into these beautiful tote bags. Two straps top a 14" high bag
that's about 18" at the top and a bit less than that at the bottom.
To help hold lots of your belongings, the depth is about 5".
There's one zippered pocket inside, and a zipper secures the top.
Colors currently available are primarily turquoise (shown) and blue, with a couple burgundy (shown).
