Ensure your wine bottle is dressed to impress with a
colorful "wine waiter" - the perfect party or picnic companion.
Not only is it a cute, one-size-fits all way to get a grip on chilly champagnes or
hide the label on that cheap bottle of wine, each protects the countertop
and dining room table from drips. Plus this waiter doesn't require a tip.
These cotton wine waiters (sometimes called wine butlers) are handmade by women with Unidas Para Vivir Mejor (United for A Better Life, or UPAVIM),
an income-generation project based just outside Guatemala City.
The cooperative was established in 1989 to give women jobs and paid its artisan a
fair trade wage to sew the infamous scrunchie hair tie that was so popular in the 1980's.
Since then, UPAVIM has grown into a 60+ member business cooperative that supports
its entire community with a variety of cloth products and by providing day-care facilities and
Montessori preschool classes.

a national trade organization.
The cooperative is currently building a four-story building that will include an expanded school, a
bakery, a soy milk production facility, a typewriting school and a senior activities center.
