Gourds, better known locally as Mates, are closely related to pumpkins, squash
and cucumbers, and are a variety of shapes and sizes.
Historically the people of the Andes use gourds for storing food and for drinking chicha and yerba mate.
The tradition of carving and burning detailed designs into the gourds to illustrate aspects of their
culture dates back more than 3,000 years. This tradition lives on in decorative gourd products
sold in local markets to tourists and for export.
We also now have gourd creations from Burkina Faso, Africa!
