Soapstone Tea Light, or Soapstone Heart Paperweight from Kenya.
The "Spring Chicken" basket contains a tea light, and the "Just Ducky" basket contains
both a tea light and a paperweight. The tea lights will be green or orange; the paperweights will be pink with
a variety of hand-painted designs.
Our soapstone sculptures are handcrafted in a workshop in Kisii, Kenya, that employs over 800 people
(about 50% are women) and provides artisans with the means to afford decent housing,
education for their children and basic healthcare.
See these and other soapstone items on our Kenyan Soapstone page.
Vetiver Grass Haitian Basket:
Vetiver is increasingly recognized around the globe as a first line defense in sediment control,
land stabilization, and rehabilitation, as its fast-growing root system binds the soil, preventing
erosion and landslides. Vetiver has a very nice, sweet aroma. The baskets are individually hand-woven.
See more in our Haitian Basket section.
Sheep Dolls from Bolivia: Our adorable sheep are handknitted by Las Delicias,
a group best known for knitting baby and childrenīs clothing and accessories from
pure alpaca wool into animal motifs. They're crafted in the hills of El Alto, a sprawling city that is
significantly poorer than neighboring La Paz. Permanent jobs are scarce, so when
the husbands are out of a job, they often help their wives with the knitting.
Your purchase enables the artisans have enough money to feed their children,
pay health and education expenses, and hope for a brighter future.
Totora Reed Boat Baskets:
Totora is an aquatic plant harvested from Lake Titicaca, one of the most culturally
rich regions of Bolivia, and the region where both the Incas and the Tiwanakans civilizations originated.
For more than 4,000 years, the Aymara Indians of this Andean region have used totora reeds to
build their boats and homes, deftly transforming this natural fiber into beautiful and
utilitarian objects.
See more in our Reed Boat Basket section.
Brazil nut candle: These candles come from the pods of Brazil nuts which grow in the rainforests of Peru.
Farmers remove the nuts to sell at the local market and the artisans collect the pods and fill them with palm oil.
Of course we only use lead-free wicks, and the candles come in lots of colors and fragrances if you decide you'd like more!
See more on our Brazil Nut Candle page.
Worry Dolls: Be happy - these dolls will take your worries away!
In the rural Mayan regions of Guatemala, hand weaving cotton cloth is a way of life.
The bright colors of the cloth are cheery enough to calm ones nerves, but with six tiny "worry dolls",
made from splinters of wood and bits of cloth and thread, as your allies you'll be worry free!
Traditionally a doll is given to a child who is instructed to tell his/her troubles or fears to the doll, then to place the doll
under the pillow and go to sleep. The next morning the when the child awakes, the doll is gone from the bed - and the worry is too!
We're pretty sure it will work for moms as well.
Banana Leaf Basket: The Basket is hand-woven from banana leaf by in Rwanda.
We couldn't have moms without dads, and this item is traditionally woven by men, many of whom survived the 1994 genocide.
Banana leaf is sturdy and easy to weave making it great for trays like this which can be used to bring you your
favorite cup of tea or coffee or as a great catch-all for mail, car keys and other items of daily life.
