Weaving Elephant Grass Baskets in Ghana, Africa
Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to emerge from colonial rule in 1957.
Today Ghana is known for its rich culture and diverse landscapes,
including the savannah grasslands where the weavers get the materials for these baskets.
The heavy elephant grass used in these baskets is tightly woven making each basket strong yet flexible.
Colors and weaving designs on these elephant grass baskets are varied.
You'll often get to choose between "bright" or "subdued" colors.
Plus, you may tell us if you have any other preferences in colors in the
optional "Special Instruction" area at checkout.

Don't worry if your basket becomes "squished" because what makes these baskets really unique
is that they can be "re-shaped" by wetting them with water and then "massaging the basket"
back into shape with your fist or open hand.
With some baskets, the handles can be pushed down into the baskets and
pulled out as needed, making it easy to store when not being used for a picnic or trip to the market.
Bolga Baskets
Our incredibly useful and durable Bolga Baskets are woven in the Bolgatanga region of Northern Ghana.
They're available with or without a handle.
For our standard shipping prices, we'll ship the baskets to you
"squished" or collapsed (see photo below). In just a few minutes, you can restore
your basket to its normal shape by wetting and massaging it. Let it sit to dry.
If you put it in the sunshine, drying will only take an hour or so.
Alternatively, choose the "Ship Unsquished" section and we'll add $15 to the shipping price.
(It means a much larger box and a special UPS shipping category.)
Or call or e-mail us and we will do an individualized shipping calculation for you to see if we can reduce the price.
