Teddy Bears for Two

In 2008, One World Projects began participating in a teddy bear distribution project in Afghanistan. For each teddy bear that we sell, another is donated to a child living in an orphanage or school in Afghanistan. The latest donation of bears were delivered to some Afghan orphanages / winter schools by Wazhma Sadat, one of our Afghan artisan partners. What she found touched our hearts, as we know it will touch yours.

When Wazhma gave teddy bears to some of the children, it was the first toy they had ever received! On the left is Shazia, just after receiving her bear. Shazia's father was killed in a bomb blast two months before she was born and her mother remarried, abandoning Shazia and her two siblings because she couldn't afford to raise her first husband's children. Shazia now lives with an uncle and spends most of her time at the orphanage. Her smile clearly conveys her joy that day!

These hand-made teddy bears make a thoughtful gift for a friend or co-worker, and we will donate a matching bear to a child in an orphanage or school in Afghanistan, who may quite possibly, like Shazia, be receiving his or her first toy ever.

You'll receive one collectible Afghan Teddy Bear for $28.00 and a second teddy bear will be delivered to a needy child in Afghanistan! This creates more work, and therefore additional earnings, for the women creating the teddy bears. PLUS a child in war-torn Afghanistan will be smiling because of your generousity. The bears have movable arms and legs because they're attached with button joints, and eyes that are tightly sewn-on beads, so note that you must decide the age-appropriateness if you're giving this teddy bear to a child. Each teddy bear is wearing a vest and matching "pakol," a traditional Afghanistan hat. More for Afghan Children: Love the project but don't need a collectible teddy bear? No problem -- we've provided an option so that you can have 2 bears commissioned for needy children in Afghanistan for $25. You'll receive a certificate acknowledging your generosity, and perhaps you'll want to give the certificate as a present to the 'person who has everything'.

Schools close for 3 months during Afghanistan's winter. Most families cannot afford to travel or to enroll their children in winter school classes. But there are some winter schools that are free for those students who cannot afford to pay for extra classes. Due to demand for these free schools, many are only for orphans.

The teddy bears are handmade by Children and Women Education Fund (CWEF), a Kabul-based non-governmental organization (NGO) that provides education and vocational training in sewing and embroidery to women and teenage girls from the lowest income districts of Kabul. Besides receiving an education and fair wages to support her family, she develops her creativity and grows in self-esteem, learning that in her hands she holds to the key to a better future.
