 SPEED Trust (Slum People Education and Economic Development), is a non-profit organization in Chennai,
India's fourth largest city and the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
This organization supports socially and economically deprived women from urban slum areas.
It offers vocational training and micro-credit loan opportunities to women,
as well as programs that focus on education, and building self-responsibility and self-confidence
for women and their children.
These recycled plastic totes are made by first melting bits of used plastic items (such as plastic bottles)
and drying them in the sun. They're then turned into plastic strands that are dyed and given to a cooperative of blind and handicapped ladies.
The women tightly hand weave the strands into these colorful, fun yet very practical tote bags.
Each year more women are rescued from living on the railroad tracks and other slum areas and given an opportunity to learn these trades.

A classic tote style with a sturdy recycled twist, these 11" high, 16" wide and 4" deep totes are
lined with a satiny fabric. A great design feature is the addition of a few small metal feet to reduce wear and tear on the tote's bottom surface, for a longer second life.
Two pockets, 1 with zipper and 1 with Velcro, provide organizational versatility.
